Photo ID Clinic Stories of Success
Winter 2025
Because of the generosity of our supporters, Ashrei is able to do more than help people fill out forms. We are able to offer time, clarity, and human connection in systems that are often confusing, inconsistent, and unwelcoming.
The following stories reflect what access can look like when people are met with dignity and steady support.
Trust That Multiplies
One morning at the clinic, a man arrived for his appointment and was quickly put at ease. After his paperwork was complete, he stayed for a while, chatting with staff and volunteers and sharing his appreciation for how he was treated.
Later that same afternoon, he returned with a friend.
He told us that in many places he has gone for assistance, people are met with impatience or attitude. That was not his experience here. He shared how pleasant and respectful everyone had been and how much that mattered to him.
Moments like this are powerful. When someone feels respected, they come back. When they feel safe, they bring others with them.
Standing With Someone Until the System Works
A woman came to the clinic visibly distressed after losing her ID for the first time in her life. She had always kept her identification valid and followed the rules, but an old, unofficial name change made her fear she would not be able to replace it.
She had already been turned away at the DMV before coming to Ashrei.
After her appointment with us, she was denied again.
We contacted the Department of Revenue directly to get accurate guidance, information that was not readily available and that differed from what she had been told at multiple DMVs. We learned she could use her expired ID to replace her lost valid one, without navigating unnecessary name change barriers.
Once we had confirmation, a staff member accompanied her back to the DMV to provide support. This time, the process went smoothly. With the right information in hand, the clerk was able to complete the transaction, and she was finally able to move forward.
This is a success story, but it also reveals how fragile access can be. No one should need insider knowledge or multiple denials to secure something as basic as identification.
Every story like this is made possible by people who believe that access to identification, stability, and justice should not depend on luck or persistence alone. Your support allows Ashrei to stand beside our neighbors for as long as it takes and to turn moments of frustration into moments of relief and progress.
Thank you for helping make dignity and access possible, one person at a time.
